Now that you have booked your session, it’s time to plan your family’s wardrobe for your fall family photos. I have been planning and thinking about fall sessions for a while now. Fall is my favorite season, so it’s no surprise that fall sessions are some of my favorites! I’m so excited for cooler temperatures and fun with your families!
I know how stressful outfit planning can be. The goods new is I’ve got your back when it comes to nailing the perfect wardrobe choices. Here are a few tips and outfit inspiration photos to keep in mind for your session this fall.
You have more than likely selected me to photograph your family because you like the light and airy style of my photos. Aside from the locations I choose, your wardrobe color choice plays a huge part in how your images look. I always encourage clients to stick with softer colors (think sage green vs dark hunter green and light pink vs hot pink, light or medium blues vs navy blue).
Obviously, fall is a time to embrace more earthy tones, so don’t hesitate to throw a little into your family’s wardrobe. If you’re choosing to throw in one of these colors, like mustard yellow or mossy green, it looks great in print form vs a solid mossy green maxi dress.
I generally recommend that you stick to 1 or 2 main colors and then accent with neutrals. Creams, tans, and light grays are great neutrals. I am a huge fan of solids, but I do love a good floral print mixed in!
Gone are the days of perfectly matching outfits in family photos. Instead, focus on coordinating colors and styles to create a complementary visual look. Let each family member’s personality shine through while maintaining a cohesive look that ties everyone together beautifully.
When it comes to choosing socks and shoes for your family photo sessions, it’s essential to focus on creating a polished and coordinated look. Solid-colored socks are your best bet, as they effortlessly complement any outfit and maintain a clean, timeless aesthetic. For shoes, aim for comfort and style in equal measure. Opt for footwear that matches the overall vibe of your family’s outfits, whether it’s chic ankle boots, classic loafers, or stylish sneakers. Remember, happy feet mean happy smiles, so prioritize comfort to ensure everyone feels relaxed and at ease during the session. With solid socks and well-chosen shoes, your family’s style will be on point, making your portraits shine.
Moms, you deserve to feel comfortable during the photoshoot, so make sure your outfit allows you to move with ease. Maxi dresses and skirts provide both style and freedom of movement, so you can be the graceful and radiant mother you are, without any restrictions.
The same goes for your children. If your children are uncomfortable, they will likely be irritable and less likely to cooperate and have fun during your session.
Think about your session location when selecting outfits for your. Are we photographing your family at a location where much of the surroundings are green (aka field sessions)? If so, you will probably want to stay away from too much green in your outfits, as you will blend into your surroundings.
If you are planning to print your portraits and create a gallery wall, keep your home decor in mind. Think about what colors will look great against your walls, on your built-ins, or even on the nightstand in your bedroom.
Above all, wear clothes that make you feel confident and comfortable. When you feel at ease, your genuine smiles and interactions will shine through, making for truly authentic family moments captured on camera.
